Theater Portfolio {Sara M.}

When Sara M., a theater actress, wrote to us about wanting to update her portfolio, we jumped at the opportunity. In her correspondence, she came across as an energetic, confident young lady, and when we met her in person, we were just as impressed by her presence and her personality. Our goal was to give her a few great head shots that were off the beaten track, just like her. We wanted to capture pictures that not only portrayed her outer beauty, but reflected the intelligent, happy way about her.

We decided on historic Old Town Alexandria for the venue, since Sara mentioned a love of quaint, picturesque architecture. We started outdoors, to take advantage of the soft sunlight, and walked around the narrow streets and alleyways, stopping where we saw something that caught our fancy.

As dusk set in, we hopped into the gorgeous, tastefully appointed interiors of the Hotel Monaco on King St. The rich shades of peacock blue and gold were a fantastic counterpoint to Sara's red dress, and the soft lighting created some very dramatic portraiture. We were so pleased with the results of this shoot, we couldn't wait to get home and look at our bounty, although we were sad to see this wonderful day end. A special thanks goes out to the gracious folks at the Hotel Monaco for their support and cooperation.

Print Model Headshots {Amy}

When we met up with Amy, we were immediately struck by her shy, unassuming nature and her wonderful personality. Formerly in the pageant circle, Amy now aspires to be a print model, and wanted a few pretty portfolio pictures to get her started. We had never worked with a model as young as her, but we were quite impressed with her quiet maturity. She was great at taking instruction, always a huge plus as far as we're concerned, and gave off a confident, trusting vibe in front of the camera.

Amy's shoot took place on historic Queen St. in Old Town Alexandria. We loved the idea of juxtaposing her natural, untamed beauty with the calm stillness of the waterfront. Most of the inspiration for this particular shoot came from Amy herself; specifically, from her lush, long tresses and her innocent, soft-spoken manner.

Funny Valentine {Tara + Danny}

In addition to our little homey celebration, we wanted to do something a little different this Valentine's Day. In the years past, we had been kept apart on February 14 by travel and fate, so this was the first time ever that we actually spent the day in one another's company. We decided to celebrate the day by heading outdoors, and having a mini-photoshoot of sorts to remember the day by.

We set out, blanket in hand, to have a little fun in the sun at a local park, but nature had other plans in store for us. We were met with incredibly strong gusts of wind that threatened to fly our blanket away, and perhaps take our heads with it! Undeterred, we set up our tripod, and had a bit of an adventure with our camera. Somehow, the crazy weather conditions brought out the goofiest in us and, although things didn't go quite as planned, it did turn out to be the most memorable Valentine's Day we had ever had!

Break Out The Bubbly {Brynne + Ryan}

Brynne and Ryan are an incredibly sweet, laid-back couple who wanted to commemorate their stay in D.C. with a little photo session to celebrate their engagement. They wanted something that was simple and unassuming, and were hoping to get out of the experience some pictures they might be able to use for their Save The Date cards.

Brynne and Ryan had great chemistry with one another, which made for great photo opportunities. Their inside jokes kept them giggling the whole time. No fake cheesing for this happy couple! A perfectly mellow, sunny afternoon made for some great lighting, and the D.C. mall made for the perfect setting: just the right mix of character and a blank canvas. The bubbles were Brynne's idea, and captured the couple's playful spirit in a fun, yet understated way.

All in all, it was a fantastic way to spend a Sunday afternoon, and we hope to have given Brynne and Ryan some wonderful mementos of their D.C. love affair.

A Day in The Park {Carolyn}

We caught up with Carolyn in D.C. on a sunlit winter afternoon last week. The sun was low in the sky, and the sublime glow provided a lovely backdrop for the shoot, casting a soft, golden glow on everything. Carolyn was the perfect model- responsive, intelligent, and beautiful. She had a wonderful sense of humor that immediately dispelled any awkwardness, and made our job so much easier.

With no clouds to diffuse the sunlight, we decided to back-light Carolyn to avoid harsh shadows and to highlight her fine hair. We set up a little picnic in the park for Carolyn, and just had her relax, read a book, and soak up the sun, while we photographed her. Meridian Hill Park was the perfect location for this particular shoot, not only because of its interesting plan, but also because of how secluded and peaceful it was. We were able to work relatively uninterrupted, and had such a great time with this shoot, that time flew by in the blink of an eye.
